Abstract :
The relationship between environment and economic development has become the major concern of the whole world, especially the developing countries. In this article, a model of coordinating degree of environment-economy compound system is set up; based on an empirical study of the Xi´an region, the supporting mechanism of the coordinated development of environment and economy is constructed with multi-disciplinary theory. It is found that regional economy in west China is expanding quickly, but the emphasis on environmental protection is far from enough, resulting in the weakening of the coordinating relationship. There is a keen need to make modifications to macro policy-making so as to put an end to the disharmony between environment and economic development. In view of the fact that the environmental interests are in a disadvantageous position as compared with immediate economic benefits, the author suggests that environmental protection should be given the priority in policy-making; only a reasonable policy, sound operating mechanism and economical environmental culture can ensure the coordinated development of environment and economy.
