Abstract
A reactor coolant pump shaft speed/position sensing system based on fiber optic technology has been developed. This system is intended to replace existing obsolete hardware in operating plants. The optical system was satisfactorily tested at a reactor coolant pump test facility. This system is designed for backfit to existing nuclear power plant reactor coolant pumps as a safety grade system. Test data show that the system is accurate and needs no field adjustments other than installation. The system has flexibility because it is digital in nature and can interface with a wide variety of electronics for processing and display.<>
