Abstract
Multimedia in the mobile environment is coming with the third generation of mobile systems. The GPRS (General Packet Radio System) is now available on the market. It is expected that packet mobile networks will dominate in the forthcoming third and fourth generation of mobile systems. The ATM is the transfer mode technology that provides a certain QoS (quality of service) and maximizes the utilization of the network resources. Therefore, it is expected that mobile networks will use ATM for multimedia traffic in the near future. In this paper, VBR multimedia traffic transmission over mobile ATM network is considered. The QoS of the traffic is investigated through simulation. For testing multimedia traffic simulated MPEG-4 video streams are used. MPEG-4 is chosen due to its dedication to error prone environments like mobile networks. Using simulation, the behavior of the QoS parameters is described in terms of the cell transfer delay (CTD), cell delay variation (CDV) and cell loss ratio (CLR), as well as the buffer occupancy
