Abstract :
A review is given of existing traffic flow modeling approaches based on the level of detail. It is shown by examples from the literature that the sub-microscopic, microscopic and macroscopic modeling approaches have been successfully applied to the problem of traffic flow control on freeways. Although significant progress was recently made in mesoscopic traffic flow modeling only the macroscopic transcription of these models was applied to the problem of traffic flow control so far
