Abstract
In May 1999, a search was conducted in the Eastern Mediterranean for the Israeli Naval Submarine (I.N.S.) Dakar. The search was conducted by an American search team consisting of Nauticos Corporation, Phoenix Marine and Williamson and Associates, Inc. During the course of this search, over 300 targets were logged. An organized approach to processing and management of data is crucial to a successful search. A systematic process of logging and positioning all targets was accomplished on this search. Each target was assigned a number and cataloged into a separate target report form, which included a sonar image of the target. An AutoCAD database was also maintained throughout the search. Target interpretation was performed by a team of search analysts to ensure multiple viewing of all data. Classification of targets was followed by detailed analysis and characterization. At this point image corrections and enhancements were performed as needed. A digital mosaic of the survey areas was created in near real time, enabling the search team to have a comprehensive picture of the entire search area. The culmination of this search was the verification on May 29, 1999 that one of the sonar contacts, in 3000 m of water, was the I.N.S. Dakar
