Abstract
An RZ SSB (real zero single sideband) transceiver equipped with recently developed circuits, such as an equal-gain combiner including a random FM noise canceller, and a digital linearizer, is considered. The circuits enable SINAD performance to be measured in nonfading and Rayleigh fading environments and compared to those measured for a 12.5-kHz-channel-spacing FM system in similar environments. The equal-gain combiner makes it possible to improve greatly the bit error rates of a 9.6-kb/s and a 4.8-kb/s modem for 40 Hz fading, without using error-correcting codes or other measures. It is concluded that the RZ SSB transceiver can be used for speech and/or data transmission in mobile communications
