Abstract :
In this paper the design for the 2004 Prius electric drive machine is investigated in detail to assess its characteristics. It takes the form a fluid-cooled interior permanent magnet machine. This information is used to generate a complete operating profile. This information is then utilized to produce a design for an alternative induction motor. The specification is found to be demanding however a design is produced for the application which is found to be operationally close to that of the current permanent magnet design and should, in theory, be cheaper to manufacture due to the absence of permanent magnets.
