Abstract :
The authors describe cell-handling primitives that can be used in the architecture of cell-switched broadband ATM (asynchronous transfer mode)-based networks. They partition the primitives into circuit modules and show how the modules can be interconnected in a variety of ways for the construction of broadband network prototypes. They show how the modules can be used in a pure cell-switching prototype and in a broadband integrated access environment, in which a single transmission link would have both circuit- and cell-switched traffic, requiring traffic grooming using the cell-handling modules
