Abstract :
In this paper, limitations of a compact and durable solid state modulator, using a 4.5kV IGBT in combination with a pulse compression circuit are evaluated. The investigated modulator utilizes two separate paths-one for ignition voltage and one for high currents. The ignition voltage is generated with a pulse compression circuit based on saturable transformers, which is used to charge a series capacitor. After saturation, the capacitor is connected to the output. Parasitics have been estimated in order to find an optimized modulator configuration. Measurement results for validating the models as well as the simulation performance are presented. Main limitation factors are described and possible solutions discussed.
