Abstract :
In the ACTS project MEDIAN, a wireless asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) based local area network for high-speed communication is realised. The use of the inherently unreliable wireless medium for ATM transmission calls for extra measures to secure sufficient link quality. As such we propose the selective repeat automatic repeat request (ARQ) scheme. The entities of the considered ARQ scheme are positioned in the logical link control layer of the mobility-enhanced MEDIAN network model. Simulation results show the delay for the ATM user cells introduced by retransmissions. Taken the stringent delay requirements of the wireless ATM services into account, it can be concluded that the retransmission delays have no significant influence on the total end-to-end delay whereas the link quality (in terms of cell loss ratio) exhibits a substantial improvement
