Abstract
The author discusses the applications of the newer cross-connect systems that terminate and cross-connect DS3-rate signals. He gives some background on the operation of the NDC-A33 system and describes two of the current applications utilizing its services. He shows that when the number of cross-connects is increased, the current approach of centralized control is no longer cost-effective. The author describes a distributed technique that could efficiently control the synchronous networks using the emerging standards
