Abstract
The authors investigate a novel method of distributing analog CATV and POTS on fiber to subscribers using AM subcarrier multiplexing. The CATV channels are remotely selected by the subscriber using a low-cost CATV tuner located at the central office or remote station. The scheme avoids the stringent requirements of high linearity and low intensity noise for laser sources and uses predominantly low-cost and readily available optoelectronic components. The feasibility of transporting simultaneously one POTS and three subscriber-selected CATV signals to the subscriber premises over a 5-km-long single-mode fiber has been demonstrated
