Abstract
This paper proposes a unified algorithm for PWM strategies of matrix converters. A general form of the modulation functions for the matrix converter is derived based on the geometric transformation approach. The research results reveal that each allowable modulation matrix can be expressed as an indirect modulation. Moreover, this paper presents a new viewpoint to consider the matrix converter as a three-level inverter and to apply the dipolar modulation technique of the three-level inverter to the matrix converter. The general form of the modulation matrix together with its realization by the dipolar PWM provides a common platform which can generate various types of PWM strategies easily by adjusting the modulation free parameters.
