Abstract :
Lightning testing of high impedance loads (IEC60060 for example) requires a pulse with a 1.2 microsecond risetime and 50 microsecond exponential fall time. This has traditionally been created with pulse generators based on the “Marx” generator using spark gap switches. Such generators suffer from reproducibility problems. They also cannot operate below a certain voltage (usually 25 % of the max) because of the difficulty in triggering the spark gaps. We will present data for a solid state pulse generator alternative which can cover the full range of voltages without requiring a compromise on the parameters of the pulse generator. The unit is a combination of an SCR pulse at up to 1300 V, a fast transformer, and a rectifier. It consists of a small oil tank and a medium sized circuit board, and it is readily portable (on wheels).
