Abstract :
The author formulates the optimization problem in a different way than is usually done in order to include a desired transient behavior directly. He applies the proposed techniques to the control of a nuclear reactor. The results indicate that if the specifications cannot be met fully, one has to trade settling time versus overshoot irrespective of the complexity of the controller. It is concluded that a full specification with complex center function is more sensitive to imperfect matching of the specifications than the simplified specification
