Abstract
The author presents the definitions of a conjugate and semi-conjugate point for a quadratic elliptic form in a Hilbert space, and states necessary and sufficient conditions for the form to be positive. It is shown that the abstract results apply to a problem in the calculus of variations where both end points are allowed to vary
