Abstract :
A 3-D ultrasonic real-time imaging device for the navigation of catheters in the beating heart has been devised. It makes use of a multiplane parallel scanning technique which allows for quick probing of the volume of interest. In this way, the whole heart or part of the heart can be accessed in less than 70 ms. The acquired 3-D data set is pre-processed by an ultrafast digital signal processor and is transferred to a PC for real-time visualization. With the help of LCD glasses a real 3-D view into the beating heart chambers is possible. The use of approved transducer and latest signal processor technology as well as low-cost consumer products for visualization will result in a cost-effective device
