Abstract
A method for computing the load placed on work centers in a manufacturing shop based on the demand, the routing of parts, and the scrap rates of operations is described. The movement of parts in the shop is modeled using flow balance equations. Given an upper limit on the utilization levels at work centers, the required production capacity is calculated. Performance measures like the average waiting time per part and the average number of parts in a buffer at each work center are estimated. An efficient method of storing and solving the flow equations allows for analysis of practical-size problems on a personal computer. Experimental results based on data of a manufacturer of aircraft engines are provided. The results are validated by simulation
