  • Abstract
In this paper, the research is focused on the X-ray induced PD phenomena in power transformers and the effect of X-ray irradiation on PD in the oil, and oil/paper insulation system. In the transformer oil gaps, X-ray induced PD was found to be much more active compared to conventional PD under the same electric stress. The X-ray induced electrons emitted from the high voltage electrode could cause these phenomena. In the pressed paper immersed in transformer oil, X-ray induced PD could be detected at very low voltage. And compared to conventional PD under the same electric stress, not only the amplitudes, and the counts from X-ray induced PD increased greatly, but also the discharge regions in the phase angles were enlarged, which are clearly shown in a 3D finger print. These facts may indicate that the X-ray induced PD measuring technique can be applied to oil/paper system, such as transformers
