  • Abstract
The author highlights two areas of lung mechanics where engineers could make valuable contributions in the future. The first concerns the development of techniques to allow early detection of airway disease, and the second concerns the fluid mechanics of inspiratory gas flow in the upper airways. The latter is considered with particular reference to inspiratory problems in divers.<>
