Abstract :
We describe a voiceband signal classifier that was implemented on a commodity personal computer platform under the Windows NT operating system. The classifier can accurately classify in real time all 24 voiceband channels of a T1 digital trunk into one of 13 different signal classes including speech, four classes of voiceband modem, three classes of fax, binary data, and several other signalling types. Classification accuracies approach 100% over all signal classes. The classifier does not use dedicated signal processing hardware; instead, all signal processing is carried out directly on the 586-class host CPU.
