Abstract :
In order to improve early stability of joint replacement the authors developed a magnetic articular prosthesis. A total hip arthroplasty model was experimented with in seven ewes. Combined magnets of samarium-cobalt and polar blocks of F-17 steel are contained in a polyacetal ball. The socket is made of F-17 steel coated with TiN and acts as a counterplate. The ewes were observed monthly. X-ray tests were performed at 3, 5 and 15 months showing only one dislocation and four femoral fractures with two spontaneous consolidations. Histological studies at 6 and 16 months revealed good biocompatibility. Early results and further applications are discussed.<>
