Abstract
The paper starts with a review of the current approaches for VAr flow compensation, pointing out their advantages and disadvantages along with the respective application domains. Then, a comparative analysis is made. Finally, the authors propose a new scheme, namely, the static synchronous parallel compensator (SSPC), which uses solid-state devices, according to the VAr flow information to control the compensation capacity dynamically. The central idea is to inject a current which is in quadrature with the line voltage to emulate an inductive or a capacitive reactance in parallel with the transmission line.
