Abstract :
Nowadays, the synchronous generators are coupled with prime mover to produce reliable ac power supply and it is indispensable in the ac power generation. Hundreds of generators are usually connected in parallel by the large interconnected transmission line network. In the power plant, numbers of generator need to be connected and disconnected from the infinite bus depend on the daily load cycle to achieve economic dispatch. The lack of knowledge on the synchronisation process may lead to catastrophic damage to the generator. Thus, it is important to exposure the students on the conditions required for the synchronisation process. There are devices available for the synchronisation process such as synchronoscope and the three-light-bulb. However, the existing synchronisation tool cannot illustrate the concepts in detail behind the synchronisation action. This paper presents the development of a custom-built virtual instrument-based synchronisation system that enables students to understand the requirements for the synchronisation of a three-phase synchronous generator. They will also be able to observe in real-time the three-phase voltage waveforms, frequency, phase sequence and phase difference in the synchronisation process.
