Abstract :
The application of controllable shunt compensation by magnetic biased type controllable shunt reactors (CSR) is considered for improving the properties of long-length transmission lines by giving the example of Russian North-West 330 kV Kola-Karelian interconnection. The reactive power consumed by CSRs in any operation condition is coordinated with the power flow through the line and voltage drop across the lines. The transfer capability is limited only by permissible current through the conductors. The investigations carried out completely confirm this statement. The type of AC transmission system proposed is strongly recommended to use as a reliable interconnection between the distant power systems.
