  • Abstract
Long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) have been fabricated typically with UV-induced photosensitivity for various applications of optical fiber communication and sensors. The temperature coefficient of wavelength shift is known to be in the range of 0.05-0.15 nm//spl deg/C for conventional LPFGs. In this work, the methods of mechanical stress relaxation and periodic microbending in B/sub 2/O/sub 3/-doped fibers by a CO/sub 2/ laser are developed for fabrication of LPFGs. Doping B/sub 2/O/sub 2/ with negative temperature dependence of the refractive index (dn/dT<0) in the pure silica or the gemanosilicate glass of positive dn/dT can either enhance or suppress the temperature sensitivity of the resonance wavelength. Without using the effect of photosensitivity, thermal sensitivity can be easily controlled by adjusting the doping concentration of B/sub 2/O/sub 3/ in either the core or the cladding.
