Abstract :
Short current and voltage pulse lengths imply the presence of high-frequency harmonics in the windings and cores of pulse transformers. These high-frequency components give rise to high losses in the windings and core and usually become the dominant parameter in limiting the maximum repetition rate that can be handled by the transformer. It is shown that core losses can be minimized by proper core material selection and flux-excursion limited design. Winding losses, which are estimated by an extension of the techniques of E.C. Snelling (1971), are optimized by selecting the most appropriate winding configuration and adjusting the winding thickness to a value giving the lowest effective AC resistance at the required spectral distribution
