Abstract :
We have evaluated the nonlinear dispersion relation in multilayer nonlinear waveguides, which are applicable to either self-focusing or self-defocusing nonlinear structures. We have also presented the nonlinear dispersion curves and the power distribution for several thicknesses of the linear core layers and the nonlinear bounding layers. The self-focusing nonlinear systems show the following: (1) the power-dependent effective index of the TE1 mode becomes larger than that of the core film and the TE0 mode in the high power region and (2) the power distribution displays an optical bistability which is similar to that of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon
