Abstract
The peer-to-peer (P2P) paradigm nowadays is used as one of the main strategies for improving performance and scalability in video on demand. P2P implies the challenge of how often peers connect and disconnect from the system, making the maintaining quality of service a key problem. Current system designs are more focused on the application level logic for data transmission, neglecting control schemes impact. In this work, we present two cost models for evaluating the failure management process of P2P clients. The models are applied to the P2Cast scheme proposed by Guo et al. By mean of analytical models and simulation, we analyze the number of control messages injected into the system and the time necessary to solve peer failures. The results point to an increasing importance of control module when system grows and P2P interactivity rises. The control load could reach between 14% and 28% if compared to video traffic.
