Abstract :
Both training sequences and pilot tones can be used to identify communication channels, the latter being more commonly used in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. This paper, by first deriving a tight lower bound on the variance of the channel estimation error, deduces the class of training sequences and the class of pilot tones which are optimal. Moreover, it is proved that both training sequences and pilot tones can achieve the same level of performance under certain conditions
