Abstract :
A new class of artificial material has been conceived to construct antennas. The material system comprises of metamaterial (metal+dielectric) and auxetic (expanding) material. This new breed of composite may be fabricated in the form of hybrid laminates having interply and intraply configurations. The profile of hybrid laminates can be chosen to suit the requirements of different types of antennas e.g. mobile phone antennas and GPS antennas etc. It is expected that such a versatile material will enhance the bandwidth of antennas and will improve the gain in their performance. It will also result in miniaturization of antennas. However, a rigorous research effort has to be undertaken.
