Abstract
This paper focus on the application of a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) unit and comprehensive control for enhancing power system transient stability. A model of the SMES system is presented. Control strategies are designed. A power system (with a SMES system) transient simulation program is developed to investigate the effect of SMES. Computer simulations on both a single-machine, infinite-bus system and a multimachine system show that the effect of SMES with the comprehensive control for improving transient stability is very significant.
