Abstract :
ALT´s method of scanning utilizes multiple facets of a single polygon in conjunction with multiple light beams reflected off of each facet. This method of scanning covers a greater target area than is covered scanning a target with a single facet. This fact is simply a function of the geometry created by deflecting a laser beam off the facet surface of a spinning polygon. Because the angle through which the beam is deflected is fixed, the area scanned at the target is also fixed. ALT´s technology overcomes this scan sweep constraint by utilizing multiple facets and light sources to concurrently sweep segments of a fixed screen display. The number of facets addressed on a single polygon becomes a function of the scanning target. If, for example, the scanning target is defined as a cylinder, all the facets of a rotating polygon can be used to image or scan the 360-degree target inside the cylinder
