Abstract :
We present a novel concept for THz systems based on a photonic local oscillator. We propose that such systems will enable the creation of highly coherent, thus highly sensitive systems for frequencies ranging from 100 GHz to 5 THz. Coherent THz systems would widen the potential application range by reducing equipment cost and increasing sensitivity. To demonstrate how such systems can be realised we also review the performance of the necessary component technologies.
