Abstract
The selection of components has a major impact on the reliability of a system. The trade-off between thermal (power consumption), operational requirements, radiation hardness (now a commercial concern), and operating frequency is discussed. The application of part acceptance testing, screening, and quality conformance (or qualification) testing, qualified processes, statistical process control, physics of failure analysis, proven design rules and manufacturer selection for improved reliability is considered as well as their cost benefit evaluation. The reliability level of the parts selected should be based on the system requirements including criticality of usage, and warranty liability
