Abstract :
Describes the MYTHSEEKER computer system and the MYTHSEEKER project. The project´s goal is to develop a class of intelligent computer systems that are capable of helping a participant to experience systems of mythology, exploring and shaping his or her “personal myth”, i.e. the mythic patterns and aspirations by which one shapes one´s life for significant purpose and meaning. Myth is a way of experiencing the world, giving meaning and shape to experience. MYTHSEEKER works with major mythological and spiritual systems of times bygone and present-and also with future systems now emerging. Examples range from Greek to Nordic mythology; from Jungian archetypal psychology to worldwide systems of shamanism; from Christian systems to those of Tibetan Buddhism; as well as present-day systems involving transpersonal experience, the holographic universe, new foundations for consciousness, etc. These are collectively called depth systems. MYTHSEEKER works with myth at the level of one´s greatest purposes. Mythic aspects can be “refocused” as one´s life changes in direction and circumstance. Involvement with myth helps with important life transitions-via rites of passage-that are needed by everyone but which are often de-emphasized in western culture
