Abstract :
Hybrid Excitation Synchronous Machine (HESM) combines the merits of high power density and good capability of air-gap magnetic field adjustment. A novel Tangential/Radial Hybrid Excitation Synchronous Machine (T/R-HESM) is proposed in this paper. Its structure and operation principle are introduced. The magnetic field distribution and static characteristics are obtained by finite element method (FEM). They indicate that magnet congregate effect of shunt-wound magnetic path is significant because of the special structure. The static characteristics of T/R-HESM are much better than that of EESM. A prototype is produced to take an experimental study, including load and no-load experiments. The experimental results verify the correctness of electromagnetic design and simulation, which demonstrate high performance of T/R-HESM. With the advantages of simple configuration, completely air-gap magnetic flux adjustment and great controllability, T/R-HESM has considerable application potentials in various fields.
