Abstract
In this paper, a new methodology for computing orientation of a chip in the image by the method of calculate best fitting ellipse based on geometric moments is described. Orientation is an essential feature needed in many image processing and pattern recognition tasks. When the computer vision system which is used in the new SMT placement, we found that fining the orientation is the key point to improve precision and speed of the placement. So we design a new algorithm computing orientation of a chip in the image by the method of moments. By comparing this algorithm with others, we get the conclusion that this algorithm is faster, more precise and robust than the others.
