Abstract :
We present a Power Line Communication (PLC) channel with attenuation, impulsive and narrowband noise. This model has been used to evaluate the performance of Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) modulation scheme and Turbo Codes. The Turbo Codes were also punctured to produce variable code rate for Unequal Error Protection (UEP) of data. For SNR above -1 dB, a gain of at least 5 dB is observed for the system with Turbo Codes as compared to the system without coding. For UEP, the less important bits were punctured but not the most important bits. For SNR ranging from -1 dB to 5 dB, the non-punctured pattern outperforms the punctured pattern, rate half, by at least 3 dB. Finally, the performance of Turbo Codes was compared to Permutation Trellis Codes (PTC). Turbo Codes outperform PTC for SNR below 4 dB.
