Abstract :
Bioelectrical impedance analysis is a safe, simple and inexpensive technology which has potential to provide much information regarding the dynamic functioning of the human body. Multiple frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis allows independent estimates of extracellular fluid (ECF) volume and total body water (TBW) to be made. We have shown that impedance analysis can provide vital data to medical staff in the neonatal intensive care unit. Applications considered include monitoring fluid balance, drug dosing in the neonate, and reducing brain damage in babies
