  • Abstract
How the information age will ´come of age´ globally through the wireless revolution and the convergence of communications and computing, driven by digital microelectronics technology is discussed. Innovative communications networks, such as Motorola´s Iridium system, are used as examples of the maturation of this revolution. The increasingly important role of semiconductors as the enabling technology platform-including microprocessors, RF, unique combinational technologies and low-power are explored, as are distinctive competencies in their design and manufacturing. Finally, the impact on the world´s environment and improvement in the quality of peopole´s lifestyles of this wireless revolution is highlighted.
