Abstract
In this paper, a novel adaptive unequal error protection (UEP) scheme is proposed which dynamically modifies the UEP level in a packet based on constraints imposed by variations in wireless channel conditions. The technique involves (1) implementing a forcing function that weighs the objective perceptual quality of the image to give the optimum protection level in a packet, and (2) utilizes a feedback mechanism to adapt to the time-varying wireless channel loss characteristics. An optimum UEP level in the transmitted packets is dynamically sought using constrained optimization in order to maintain maximum perceptual quality at the end user. Simulation results show that the proposed technique outperforms the existing constant UEP approaches, especially for packet loss probabilities greater than 0.5.
