Abstract :
Summary form only given. The Medium Energy Neutral Atom (MENA) instrument has been imaging neutral atom emission from the Earth´s magnetosphere since it was carried into space in 2000 aboard the IMAGE satellite. The fundamental aspects of the neutral atom imaging process is described in this talk. Recently, it was demonstrated that plasma sheet ion temperatures can be remotely determined from MENA data during storm intervals. However, low emission rates make such an analysis more challenging during quiet intervals. Using a superposed-epoch analysis and an image-summing algorithm, we have been able to accumulate enough counts to image the ion temperature structure of the quiet time magnetosphere.
