Abstract :
Summary form only given. A 2D simulation code has been used to model the 2M210 magnetron which operates in the ISM band at a nominal frequency of 2.45 GHz and average power level of 1 kW. Calculations have been made of the voltage vs. current characteristic for space-charge limited and temperature-limited operation of the cathode. These computations address the fundamental nature of noise generation in each of these regimes; spurious signal production which produces modulation of the carrier with associated sidebands is of secondary interest. An attempt is being made to relate instabilities observed in the smooth-bore magnetron to the space-charge and temperature-limited operation of the oscillating magnetron. The status of this investigation will be presented.
