Abstract :
Summary form only given. The diode research programme at AWE has identified a requirement for a driver for low impedance (/spl sim/50 ohm) diode development. The Eros single pulse forming line (SPFL) machine at AWE was identified as being suitable but in its current configuration it produces a 150 kV bi-polar pre-pulse, too high for reliable diode operation. Based upon experience with another smaller SPFL X-ray machine, Mini B, switches have been inserted between the Blumlein and the insulator stack and in the magnetically insulated transmission line (MITL) stalk to reduce the pre-pulse. Calculations and measurements have been made of the pre-pulse at both the base and diode end of the MITL stalk, which will be described in depth.
