Abstract :
The study of the lightning performance of transmission lines is conducted in this work by using statistical and analytical methods in order to predict shielding failure and backflashover rates. The incidence of lightning strokes on transmission lines is calculated by using the electrogeometrical model. Lightning overvoltage calculations are made by using a multiphase conductor travelling wave method, in order to determine the effect that the rise time has on the tower top potential, as well as for different grounding resistances. A simple model, for backflashover calculations, is considered in the program, as recommended by IEEE Working Groups. Predicted 115 kV transmission line results are compared to field observations showing good correlation
