Abstract :
The authors develop a composite system involving the simultaneous measurement of electrical charge amplitude and acoustic emission (AE) pulse amplitude of partial discharges (PD) and their correlation to fractal dimension, and to use the system to investigate the treeing phenomena in polymeric insulation with an artificial needle-shaped void. We analyzed the phase angle-electrical charge amplitude-deterioration time (Φ-QA-t) pattern and phase angle-acoustic emission amplitude-deterioration time (Φ-AEA-t) pattern using statistical operators such as skewness and kurtosis. Our studies show that the correlation of electrical charge amplitude, AE pulse amplitude and fractal dimension can be used to predict breakdown just before it occurs
