Abstract :
The advent of technology has facilitated widespread advancements in the field of assistive technologies for the physically handicapped. Exoskeletons are one of the relatively new areas of extensive research, promising to return the use of paralyzed limbs to the wearer. STARK is a battery-powered, lightweight exoskeletal framework of an arm to provide support to, or enhance the physical capabilities of, the wearer. To those who have lost the use of their hands due to some form of paralysis, it restores mobility to the arm and helps the wearer regain their independence to a certain extent. It can be worn over their bodies, to augment their own physical abilities. Users wear it on their arm, and it moves with them, providing protection, support and added power as they do things such as holding tools, or operating heavy machinery in front of themselves. Not only will this device enable a paralyzed person to regain the use of their hand, in a mechanical sense, but it can also be used to facilitate the retraining process of muscles and nerve connections, and to shorten the recovery time for people who have been rendered temporarily paralyzed.
