  • Abstract
In this paper, we aim at designing a simple but optimal PID controller for a Boost converter to gain a set of favorite characteristics that is a good transient as well as steady state responses and switching stability. That is done by means of a multi-objective optimization approach called Strength Pareto algorithm, which is based on Pareto Optimality concept used in Game theory literature. In the first scenario, start up regime of the converted is optimized. Settling time and overshoot are taken as two objective functions while the PID controller´s gains (Kp, Ki, and Kd) are design variables. The program generates a set of optimal gains called Pareto Set corresponding to a Pareto Front, which is a set of optimal results for the objective functions. One can easily pick out any of the results based on its features and its own engineering view. Then maximum and minimum bands of the hard limiter in the loop are considered as additional variables which significantly improve the response. In another design, besides the large signal start up behavior, dynamic response of the converter is also optimized. Finally besides, optimal start up, a new objective function is defined ensuring switching stability and chaos rejection, a concept is of quite importance. Extensive simulation and some experimental results prove the superiority of the proposed design methodology to achieve a wide set of desired technical goals.
