Abstract :
Three main facets of CSCW research and development are: communication, coordination, and collaboration. Collaboration is the final purpose, while communication and coordination mechanisms are to provide necessary support and environment for collaboration. We broadly classify CSCW studies in two general categories: formal and informal. We argue that the main difference between the two types of CSCW studies is that whether there exists a set of formal collaboration rules, observed under a set of resource constraints, which is enforced in the cooperative work
